Windows 10 End of Life Support

Support Update

Windows 10 end of life is fast approaching. Twice as many devices are still running Windows 10 compared to Windows 11. Schools should begin exploring upgrade options as soon as possible.

Turn IT on has been supporting schools with this transition and can offer guidance on the current specification of devices, the upgrade process, the supply of hardware and finance options, including leasing. Our School Development Team are on hand to advise you on all of the above.

When will Windows 10 support end?

As of October 14th 2025, Microsoft will cease providing updates or support for Windows 10. This is crucial for maintaining your school’s IT security and compliance.

What does Windows 10 end of support mean?

From 14th October 2025, devices still running Windows 10 will no longer receive bug fix patches, security updates and technical support from Microsoft. Windows 10 may also not be compatible with newer technologies released.

Out-of-date software on devices can increase the risk of security issues and data breaches. This is because they may not have access to important updates and security fixes provided by vendors. Schools should ensure they are using up-to-date software and systems to protect their data and information, which will help prevent potential security threats and vulnerabilities.

Considerations for upgrading to Windows 11

When deciding between upgrading your existing Windows 10 devices or purchasing new devices with Windows 11 pre-installed, there are several considerations to think about:

  • Licensing: A valid Microsoft OVS or CSP Licensing agreement provides access to the latest Windows 11 activation keys. If you do not have a licensing agreement in place then our in-house team can help.
  • Specification: Windows 11 has specific system requirements that your PC or laptop must meet to be eligible for the upgrade. If your current Windows 10 device meets these requirements, you can upgrade it to Windows 11. However, it is important to analyse the hardware specifications of your device before deciding.
  • Cost: If you have Windows 10 devices that meet the system requirements for upgrading to Windows 11, updating them could be a cost-effective option. However, it’s important to note that if your device is older than three years, there’s a possibility that it may become slower after the update and investing in new devices may be worth investigating.

Why upgrade to Windows 11?

Even though October 2025 is over 12 months away, it’s important to start considering options now before Windows 10 reaches the end of support. The benefits of upgrading to Windows 11 include:

  • Improved security: Advanced features like malware protection, phishing prevention, and enhanced app security help protect your school from modern-day threats.
  • AI optimisation: Windows 11 secures your systems with the latest security updates and also optimises educational tools like Microsoft Co-Pilot.
  • Enhanced user experience: Windows 11 offers faster speeds, smoother-running programs, and an overall improved user experience.
